Youth & Dating Relationships - Statistics

  • About one in three high school students have been or will be involved in an abusive relationship.
  • Teen dating violence most often takes place in the home of one of the partners.
  • In 1995, 7 percent of all murder victims were young women who were killed by their boyfriends (Bureau of Justice Special Report: Intimate Partner Violence, May 2000).
  • Over 1/4 of teen victims equate violence with love, whereas only 5% associate violence with hate.
  • More than half of the students who witness their parents being abusive to each other become involved in an abusive relationship (House of Ruth Inc., 1995).
