Sexual Assault - Realities of Sexual Assault

MYTH: Women are raped in alleys, by strangers.
FACT: Most rapes are perpetrated in survivors' homes by someone that they know. In 2002, New Mexico Law Enforcement reported that 91% of rapes were perpetrated by someone that the survivor had known.

MYTH: Women ask to be raped when they wear skimpy clothing or go home with men.
FACT: No one deserves or asks to be raped. In fact, most sexual assaults are planned. Most sexual assaults are perpetrated by someone who is of the same ethnicity as the survivor.

MYTH: Women lie about being raped to get the man in trouble, or because they regret having sex.
FACT: Women rarely lie about being raped. However, often the effects of disclosing the assault can bring on so much pressure that the survivor recants, or takes back, her statement. The FBI estimates that only one in ten rapes are reported (some estimate as few as one in twenty).
