Sexual Assault - After Sexual Assault

Decisions might be difficult. There are no right answers, only what is right for you. People have different reactions to being sexually assaulted. No one reaction is the "right way" to handle the range of emotions you might be experiencing. Everyone copes in her own way. Understanding that these feelings are normal and experienced by others can help make the reactions less scary.

Emotions that you might experience any time after you have been assaulted include:

  • Feelings of anger, sadness, shame
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Decreased or Increased Appetite
  • Panic attacks
  • Mood swings
  • Withdrawal from relationships or activities
  • Anxiety
  • Nightmares
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of betrayal
  • Angry outbursts
  • Not able to stop thinking about what happened.
  • Feelings of isolation
  • Helplessness
  • Changes in your sex drive
  • Grief
  • Flashbacks

Again, this list represents just some of the reactions that you may experience. Any response that you have is ok. Some of these feelings might occur immediately following the assault and some might occur days later.
