Domestic Violence - Statistics

Women:

  • 31% of American women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
  • A woman is beaten every nine seconds in the United States.
  • On average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country every day.
  • Approximately 17% of pregnant women report having been battered.
Children:
  • 80% of children who live in homes where domestic violence occurs witness the abuse.
  • Violent juvenile offenders are four times more likely to have grown up in homes where they saw violence.
  • Children who have witnessed violence at home are five times more likely to commit or experience violence when they become adults.
Men:
  • Statistically men perpetrate 85% of intimate partner domestic violence.
Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender:
  • Approximately one-third of lesbian and gay relationships are believed to contain domestic violence. This statistic parallels that of heterosexual relationships. (New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence)
New Mexico - 2002
  • There were 17,397 victims of domestic violence identified by NM law enforcement.
  • There were 15.8 incidents of domestic violence for every 1,000 persons in NM. (Incidence and Nature of Domestic Violence in NM IV, Betty Camponera, Ph.D., 2003)
