Domestic Violence - Kinds of Abuse Physical Kicking, punching, shoving, slapping or any other acts that hurt one's body.
Sexual Forced or pressured sexual acts, including rape. Physically attacking the sexual parts of someone's body. Treating someone like a sex object. Forcing one to have unprotected or "un-safe" sex.
Verbal, Emotional, Psychological Humiliation and degradation, including name-calling. Making someone think they are crazy ("I didn't say that"), playing mind games. The silent treatment. Withholding affection.
Coercion and Threats Making and/or carrying out threats in order to hurt someone. Threatening to take the children, commit suicide or report to TANF or Children's Protective Services.
Intimidation Using looks, actions, gestures, yelling, destroying property and stalking to instill fear. Abusing or killing pets.
Isolation Controlling whom someone sees, talks to, where they go and what they do. Limiting outside involvements. Using jealousy to justify actions.
Minimizing, Denying, Blaming Making light of the abuse, saying it did not happen. Telling someone that bthey deserve to be abused.
Spiritual Attacking one's spiritual or religious beliefs.
Economic Keeping someone from getting or holding a job or an education. Taking or withholding money or controlling how all of the finances are handled. Forcing someone to work and be the sole means of financial support.
Homophobia Threatening to "out" sexual orientation to people who do not know. Reinforcing internalized homophobia.
Immigration Using one's immigration status and fear of deportation to control someone.
Male Privilege Justifying that it is a man's right to use violence and abuse.
