Child Abuse - Statistics
  • One third of all sexual assaults reported to police in the U.S. involve victims under the age of 12. (1)
  • One half of all sexual assaults reported to police and service providers in New Mexico involve victims under the age of 12. (2)
  • Nationally, 90% of victims under 12 knew their offender. (3)
  • In Taos County, 100% of victims under 12 knew their offender in 2003. (4)
  • More children suffer neglect than any other form of abuse. (5)
  • Children abused or neglected are 53% more likely to be arrested as juveniles and 38% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. (6)
